Noodles & Company is aiming for a minimum 7% system-wide unit growth goal in 2022 and banking on franchise development to make it happen.

The fast casual brand is also striving for 10% annual growth starting next year as it plans to hit 1,500 units, according to a press release. The company operates close to 450 locations across 29 states.

The goals are not unrealistic given the brand saw a 128% increase in digital sales in 2020, which accounted for 62% of overall sales. It was poised to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic as it was already operating 56% of its business in an off-premise setting and accelerated the strategy to deal with the fast changes in consumer behavior, according to the release.

Its planned franchise expansion will target southern and southwestern markets including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New Mexico, South Carolina and Texas.

"Noodles & Company is a differentiated concept, being the only brand that offers noodle dishes from around the world in a fast-casual setting. With no direct national competitors, Noodles is a trusted and successful partner for franchisees looking to be part of a leading concept," John Ramsay, vice president of franchise sales, said in the release. "With strong average unit sales and attractive unit economics, we have a compelling franchise model that is well-suited to meet today's environment and the ability to adapt to the trends of tomorrow and years to come. There's great opportunity for growth in major, untapped markets and we're looking forward to working with franchisees who are well connected in their community, passionate about food, and are excited to bring fresh, delicious noodle dishes to their market."
