Midwest grocer becoming largest Wahlburgers franchisee

September 1, 2017

Thanks to Wahlburgers, Hy-Vee is getting in the better-burger business.

The Midwest supermarket chain has partnered with the burger chain, founded by Executive Chef Paul Wahlberg and his celebrity brothers, Mark and Donnie, according to a company press release. The chain plans to build, own and operate 26 Wahlburgers restaurants — nearly doubling the brand's current locations and becoming the chain's largest franchisee.

"I would personally like to welcome Hy-Vee to the Wahlburgers family," Paul Wahlberg said in the release. "It's a great honor to be able to partner up with a company that has a long and successful history in the two areas that are very important to Wahlburgers, quality and customer service."

In addition, all 84 Hy-Vee Market Grille restaurants, which are inside the grocery stores, will offer Wahlburgers-branded menu items.

"There is a changing landscape in the retail industry," Hy-Vee CEO Randy Edeker said in the release. "Hy-Vee has a responsibility to our customers, employees and communities to look for new ways to strengthen our company. With this type of progressive action, Hy-Vee is well positioned for future growth."

The first Hy-Vee-owned Wahlburgers will open in mid-2018, in West Des Moines, Iowa.

"Hy-Vee has been a great partner for us with our Performance Inspired Nutrition line. Their commitment to quality and innovation shows in everything they do," said Mark Wahlberg. "I can't think of a better fit for Wahlburgers to introduce our family's hospitality to the Midwest."
