Meatheads has kicked off its fifth year of summer reading with the 2015 Voracious Reading Program. The program, which runs until late August at all 16 Meatheads locations in Chicagoland and Indiana, encourages kids to read
books during the summer to stay sharp, according to a company press release.
“While we’re involved in our communities year-round, we’re always excited to help encourage kids to read over the summer through our Voracious Reading Program,” said Joe Sanders, director of marketing. “With the addition of several children’s book authors and events with local bookstores, we think this summer will be fun for the entire family.”
How it works
Students must read five books to earn one a little Meatheads burger. They then print a certificate at meatheadsburgers.com for a parent or guardian to sign. Some of the most popular titles students typically read over the summer include: "The Little Engine That Could," "The Giving Tree" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," according to the release.
To make reading fun for the enttire family, Meatheads is partnering with Open Books and Little Brown Books for Young Readers to host reading events throughout the summer with local authors, crafts and story time, according to
the release. Events include:
In addition to the author events, Beth Engelman, columnist and blogger for Mommy On A Shoestring, will host garden-themed reading events throughout the summer. She will read books about gardening, plants and going
green. All kids who attend will decorate a flower pot to take home.
Lastly, other events include storytime with Anderson’s Bookshops and Jane Addam’s Book Shop, local library bookmobiles and Middle Literate-hosted kids poetry pod-casts.
