Maui Wowi is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, but in the wake of the eruption of the Kilauea is shifting its focus onto the people of Hawaii rather than the anniversary milestone.
From July 30 to Aug. 31, participating Maui Wowi locations will have a donation box where guests can donate to Red Cross of Hawaii’s relief fund for those affected by the ongoing eruption of the Kilauea volcano. Money raised will go toward providing shelter, relief supplies and comfort to victims.
The Kilauea Volcano began erupting on May 3, and over the past two months has incinerated more than 600 homes on the Big Island. Lava and smoke have engulfed homes, schools and small businesses.
"We are proud that we are able to use our anniversary as a way to spread awareness and garner donations for what is happening on the Big Island," Maui Wowi Brand President Mike Weinberger said in the release. "We invite all new and longtime fans of the Maui Wowi brand to help us celebrate by pitching in anything they can — from a couple cents to a couple of dollars. Cheers to another 35 years of serving delicious smoothies and coffees — and always being there for the 'Ohana."
Founded in 1983, the brand today boasts more than 450 operating units and an online store.
