Man arrested for using wireless Internet
July 17, 2006
SJ-R.com: On a recent weekday, Jim Stevens, 58, was using the free wireless Internet connection at a Panera Bread Co. store. "There was Internet somewhere along the line, and I was able to find old classmates," said Stevens, who worked for the Department of Corrections for 25 years. "Is that illegal?"
It could be, according to Illinois law.
In March, a northern Illinois man pleaded guilty to accessing an unsecured wireless network without the owner's approval. The case was the first of its kind in Illinois, and one of only a few ever prosecuted across the country.
