IFA delegates meet with California legislators to caution and educate

A delegation of franchisees and franchisors representing more than 82,000 businesses throughout California met in Sacramento with state legislators to tout the franchise industry’s contributions to the state's economy, its purported role in helping California rebound from recession and its belief in the strength of the existing franchise laws in the state, the International Franchise Association announced today.

IFA’s legislative day is also aimed at educating lawmakers about franchise businesses in the state, including such names as Domino’s Pizza, The UPS Store, SportClips, Jiffy Lube, FASTSIGNS, InterContinental Hotels and California Closets.

Franchises employ nearly one million California workers and generate more than $94 billion in economic output, the announcement said.

The delegation cautioned lawmakers about supporting legislation that would hamper franchise business growth, such as bills that were passed in previous assemblies and vetoed by Governor Brown, IFA said.

"We are opposing any efforts to attempt to fix a system that simply is not broken," said Saunda Kitchen, Mr. Rooter Plumbing franchise owner in Sonoma County. "Due to existing federal and state disclosure requirements, local small business franchise owners like myself and brand companies like my parent company, are acutely aware of our respective obligations. Legislation that changes the terms of contracts in the middle of the game threatens our industry, will hurt jobs, small businesses and undermine California’s economy recovery."
