Seventy-eight percent of American consumers will order food for delivery at least once while watching the Olympics this summer, according to a survey by Nextbite, a provider of a virtual restaurant solution.

"Ordering food for delivery is now a part of the viewing experience for the Summer Games of 2021," Alex Canter, CEO of Nextbite, said in a company press release. "During the pandemic, Americans had to wait an extra year for the Summer Games and became big fans of delivery."

Over twice as many Americans (81%) were planning to watch the Summer Games as those who watched the NBA Finals (38%). Hardcore viewers will watch most days (28%), some will watch daily (15%), while 12% planned to watch a couple of times during the event.

The July survey polled 1,256 adults in the U.S.

Men and women have different preferences. For women, the top five sports were: gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, water sports and soccer. For men, they were basketball, swimming, soccer, gymnastics and volleyball.

While men and women may not agree on what events to watch, they agreed on what to order for delivery while viewing. Topping the list of favorite foods for delivery during the Summer Games were pizza (51%) and burgers (35%).

The survey also revealed that gymnastics was the most popular Summer Games event overall, with 67% of respondents planning to watch it. Among survey respondents, 75% of women and only 61% of men planned to watch gymnastics. While watching, 15% of consumers said they'd order wings to go along with the thrill and action of the event.
