Boston will be home to the 2,000th Gong cha location when a store opens next week at 412-414 Highland Ave., in Somerville, Massachusetts. The chain, which was founded in 2006 in Taiwan and is in 23 countries, is hosting a Global Tea Party on July 21 to mark the occasion.
"We invite bubble tea lovers from around the world to join us in this celebration, as we not only share delicious tea but also create unforgettable memories together," Geoff Henry, president of the Americas at Gong cha, said in a company press release.
The #GongchaTeaParty will kick off at 2 p.m. in stores worldwide, offering a promotion for the first 100 customers in each store. With every signature Black Pearl Milk Tea purchased, customers will receive another for free. The chain is also hosting a global social media contest where guests who share photos of their experiences using the hashtag #GongchaTeaParty will be entered to win one year's supply of Gong cha drinks.
The 2,000th location will serve a limited-edition beverage that nods to one of the city's iconic desserts — Boston Cream Pie Bubble Tea, which will cost $2. With the purchase of the drink, guests will receive a free Boston Cream Pie donut from Union Square Donuts. Additionally, the location will give the first 200 customers a free Black Pearl Milk Tea, and the first 20 will come served in the Gong cha MEGA mug.
