Fatburger returning to Japan

December 17, 2025

Los Angeles-based restaurant company FAT Brands Inc. has opened a Fatburger location in Okinawa, marking the burger chain's return to the Japanese market. It first entered the market in 2018 with a Tokyo location but closed in 2023.

The new restaurant, located in Kadenacho, is the first of four locations planned for the prefecture. The expansion is part of a partnership with franchisee Green Micro Factory Inc. to re-establish the brand's presence in the region.

"We look forward to bringing the Fatburger experience back to Japan, as this opening marks a significant milestone towards our global expansion strategy," Jake Berchtold, chief operating officer of FAT Brands' Fast Casual Division, said in a company press release.

Yasushi Okuda of Green Micro Factory Inc. said Okinawa is a strategic entry point for the brand.

"All-American chains continue to flourish on the island," Okuda said in the release. "We look forward to a warm reception from both locals and tourists."

Fatburger, founded in Los Angeles more than 70 years ago, specializes in made-to-order beef burgers with a wide variety of toppings, including eggs and chili. The menu also features turkey burgers, plant-based options, scratch-made onion rings, and milkshakes made with real ice cream.
