DoorDash, GM Cruise start autonomous car tests in March

January 3, 2019

DoorDash and General Motors Cruise Automation have partnered to put the auto company's Cruise self-driving vehicles to the test to improve autonomous delivery efficiency with both ready-made restaurant meals and grocery fulfillment with select DoorDash partners.

The partnership begins in San Francisco this March, according to the companies, when they will test the vehicles to determine:

  • The key autonomous delivery technical and infrastructure challenges.
  • Potential positive impacts of such delivery to merchants, dashers and customers.
  • The level of quality of such delivery.

The companies said Cruise has been testing vehicles in the Golden Gate city for three years and has built a runner system to move orders from merchant to autonomous vehicle. Customers will be notified when the vehicle nears their location.
