Although dining in is back in full swing, customers are still relying heavily on contactless delivery, according to an analysis from App Annie, a mobile data and analytics provider, that revealed that food and grocery delivery app use was still increasing.

DoorDash ranked No. 1 among food and drink apps in April 2021 in the U.S. and received 2.1 million new downloads, a continuation of the company's top ranking in Q1 2021 by downloads in the US.

Other findings include:

  • Consumers who used weeknight dinner delivery also used grocery delivery services. In fact, 10% of US DoorDash users on iPhones also used Instacart.
  • Additionally, Walmart InHome Delivery consistently ranked in the top 200 food and drink apps by daily iPhone downloads during the pandemic.
  • A mix of grocery delivery, food delivery and QSR apps top the downloads charts in China, Japan and South Korea. KURASHIRU, a cooking app ranked No. 3 by Food and Drink downloads in Japan in Q1 2021, ahead of any fast food app.

"Despite many consumers enjoying restrictions being lifted and indoor dining reopening, we are still seeing a spike in both food and grocery delivery app usage the past few months," Lexi Sydow, head of Marketing Insights, App Annie, said in a company press release. "Food and grocery delivery apps are a package deal that's here to stay."
