Nashville-based Captain D's has officially entered the Northeast market, opening its first New York location in the Bronx on Dec. 8.
The opening at 763 E. Gunhill Road marks a significant departure from the brand's traditional real estate strategy. To accommodate the density of New York City, the company debuted a 650-square-foot "express" prototype. Unlike the chain's standard suburban models, this location features no dining room and no drive-thru, relying entirely on a walk-up counter and takeout service, said Brad Reed, chief fevelopment officer of Captain D's, said in a company press release.
The Bronx location is operated by franchisee Shahid Raza and the FSR Group, a team of seasoned operators who also manage a Checkers on the same retail strip.
"One of the reasons we chose to franchise with Captain D's is that the brand fills a gap in the markets it serves by pairing high-quality seafood with great value," Raza said in the release. "This new walk-up prototype is fast, convenient, and built for the Bronx."
Despite the smaller footprint, the location serves the chain's full menu, including signature batter-dipped fish, grilled shrimp, hushpuppies and Southern-style sweet tea.
The move is part of a broader expansion plan for the 56-year-old brand. FSR Group is developing three additional locations in the New York City area and five in the Baltimore metro area.
"This Bronx opening marks an important step in our strategic growth into the Northeast, showcasing how we can deliver on the Captain D's brand promise in markets where space comes at a premium," Reed said.
Captain D's currently operates more than 530 restaurants across 23 states.
