Blaze Fast-Fire'd Pizza launched three Earth-friendly initiatives Monday, including ending the use of straws at its 300-plus restaurants, introducing a more sustainable vegan spicy chorizo topping and resourcing all its pesto basil through an organic hydroponic grower, Cleveland-based Green City Growers. The pesticide-free, water-sparing producer is among the nation's largest urban farms with more than a football field's length of space for growing basil, according to a company press release.
"We consistently strive to keep intelligent choices top of mind, whether offering a new plant-based protein at no extra charge, or deciding to offer strawless lids to support larger, globally-relevant issues," President and CEO Jim Mizes said in the release.
In order to eliminate straws at its 300-plus stores, the chain is using domed lids for fountain beverages and is running an in-restaurant "Straws Suck" campaign to tell customers about the change, according to the release.
