Founders are built differently. You make decisions that most people will never face. You carry a vision most people will never see. And every day, you lead teams, serve customers and create impact while navigating uncertainty, competition, and constant change.
That's why the most valuable lessons often come from those who are on the same journey. One question we ask in every Founderology-Built to Breakthrough Podcast is: "What is the one piece of advice you would give to a Founder listening right now?"
The responses are always honest, hard-earned insights from Founders who have built, scaled, struggled, rebuilt, innovated and persevered. We wanted to share our top 10 insights that will inspire your leadership, strategies and to grow with more purpose as you move into the new year.
Let these Founders' well-earned advice guide you, challenge you and remind you that you're not building alone. You're building with a community of Founders who understand exactly what it takes.
1. Danielle Mahon – Topsail Steamer: "Stay rooted every day in your WHY — why you're doing this. It's easy to get lost in operations and everything happening around you. Staying rooted in your why protects your culture and allows you to build something genuinely meaningful."
2. Joe Fontana — Fry the Coop: "Never, ever, ever give up. If you truly believe in something with all your heart and you know it can work, don't give up. You may need to pivot or tweak things, but if you believe it's something special, stay with it."
3. Daniella Senior — The Colada Shop: "It's all in the details. None is too small."
4. James Bonanno — Upstream Hospitality Group: "Don't make decisions based on emotion. Sit down and think it through, and think the moves through where they're going to end up. Be very deliberate about what you do. Don't get emotional and really think the decisions through."
5. Erin Wade — Homeroom: "My advice is to take a break. That's where I consistently found the most insight. When things are stressful or going poorly, stepping back helps you see the bigger picture. You can't gain perspective unless you give yourself space."
6. Pinky Cole — Slutty Vegan: "Never take your hands off the wheel. Even when your business grows to a thousand locations, keep your eye on it. You're the visionary and the creator — stay aware of what's happening in your business."
7. Derrick Hayes — Big Dave's Cheesesteaks: "Learn your business before looking for investors or raising capital. Truly understand what you're selling. What makes you special is knowing your brand, your culture, and how to scale it. Make sure your P&Ls match your deck so your future is believable. Stay focused, and don't take your hand off the wheel — the bigger you get, the harder it gets."
8. Sabin Lomac — Cousins Maine Lobster:"Be authentic. Tell your story. Let people know who they're supporting. Be vulnerable — share your family, your strengths, your weaknesses. Your vulnerability and transparency are superpowers, and people want to support the human behind the business."
9. Roberto Espinosa — Tacodeli: "Believe in what you're doing and keep going. If you're not working with real passion for this industry, it becomes very hard. Passion for the food, your team, and your guests is what makes the work meaningful — the monetary rewards come later."
10. Ellis Winstanley — Axial Shift: "Stay tenacious. Listen and pay attention to what's happening around you. Be flexible and don't be afraid to change your mind when you learn something new — but stay committed to your core mission."
