Have you ever heard the phrase, "You can't see the forest for the trees"? This metaphor is particularly relevant for Founders, as it highlights how we can become so deeply entrenched in the daily details of our businesses that we lose sight of our bigger vision. Lately, I've been reflecting on this saying and its implications for Founders.
Here are a few questions I have been discussing with Founders about their "business forests":
As you plan for the growth and success of your business, remember that one of the key determinants of success is the strength of your leadership team — specifically, leaders who share your vision, the "tall trees." Sometimes, as Founders, we must assess our "business forest" to ensure we're not the only tall tree. Being the only tall tree is exhausting and can slow growth. But a diverse business forest—one with multiple tall trees—accelerates success.
Being a Founder can be an isolating experience, especially when you're the primary decision-maker. That's why it's essential to evaluate the strength of your "business forest." Are you the tallest tree, and who can support your ascent to gain a broader view of the future? Additionally, consider how you are hiring leaders specifically for your team. Successful Founders hire leaders who can be additive to their business, who are self-sufficient and can come in and make a positive impact.
Another key aspect of the "Tall Trees" is networking with Founders (other tall trees) who stand taller than you. As a Founder, consider how many of these taller trees can pull you up to a higher vision. Recently, I decided it was time to embark on a "Tall Tree Tour." I typically do this as part of my KWP Annual Planning process. I reached out to six Founders who have distinct perspectives, diverse thinking, and unique insights compared to my own. These experiences are both inspiring and energizing.
During our discussions, we challenge one another, strategize, and connect on a wide range of topics. It is a terrific tour for personal and professional growth. What Founders (taller trees) would you visit on your Tall Tree Tour? How can you make your Tall Tree Tour happen in person or virtually sooner rather than later? It can be an energizing experience for yourself and your business.
Growing your forest
In the end, the forest is yours to cultivate. Whether you're standing tall as the sole visionary or surrounded by fellow tall trees, the clarity of your bigger vision depends on stepping back to truly see your "business forest." Ask yourself the tough questions, assess the strength of your leadership, and don't hesitate to bring in taller trees/experts to accelerate your growth.
And don't wait — plan your Tall Tree Tour virtual or in-person. Seek out the Founders who stretch your thinking and elevate your vision. Let their perspectives challenge and inspire you. Because when tall trees come together, the forest doesn't just grow — it powerfully multiples .
Let's keep Growing — Together!
