Roam Artisan Burgers opened on San Francisco’s Union Street in Summer 2010. The restaurant was founded by Josh Spiegelman and Lynn Gorfinkle, who focus on serving gourmet menu items in an environment that features sustainable building materials.
The restaurant’s exterior features several outdoor dining tables. Of the restaurant's vision: “We wanted to provide the best of what’s out there … and do what’s best for the people, animals and environment,” said Roam co-founder Lynn Gorfinkle.
Upon entering the restaurant, guests order at the counter and then either sit at the bar or at a smattering of tables located throughout the restaurant. The space was empty for about eight months before Josh realized its potential.
Interior enhancements include lamps made out of recycled bottles. The restaurant boasts a recycling program and composts leftover food. The bar is made of reclaimed wood from a Kentucky tobacco farm while the in-house plates are made of plant fibers.
Adorning the shelves behind the bar are Roam-branded soda bottles. The restaurant makes its own brand of carbonated beverages that features four signature varieties. Sodas include Meyer Lemon, Ginger Lime, Prickly Pear and Caramelized Pineapple.
Roam also showcases regional wines and beer on tap. It also makes its own version of kombucha, a fermented tea with a history that dates back to 19th Century Russia. Spiegelman said the restaurant often sells more kombucha than soda.
The restaurant’s burger selection includes the Tejano (pepper jack, jalapeno relish, avocado, tomato, white corn strips and herb ranch), and the French & Fries (truffle parmesan fries, gruyere, avocado, caramelized onions, watercress and Dijon mustard).
The menu at Roam Artisan Burgers includes a selection of fries: Russet, Sweet Potato or the Zucchini Onion Haystack. Custom toppings include Truffle Parmesan, Fresh Herb and Chipotle Maple.
Salads and vegetables include the Farmers Market Salad featuring mini burger patties and seasonal offerings such as Sweet Baby Broccoli with Lemon Garlic, Chili Flakes and Parmigiano Reggiano.
No dinner at Roam would be complete without a custom-made milkshake. Signature flavors include Coconut, Dagoba Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Strawberry and Blue Bottle Coffee.
The restaurant also features a full children’s menu complete with crayons and a coloring book. Items on the children’s menu include a kids burger combo, kids grilled cheese combo and a selection of organic apple juice, milk or a house-made soda.
