Several restaurant chains are now using JobOn to screen and hire hourly workers for their restaurants. Starbucks, Saladworks, Jamba Juice and Smoothie King, among others, are adopting the technology because recorded video job interviewing saves busy restaurant operators a lot of time when compared to the traditional method, said Teri Devito, executive vice president of human resources for The Greene Turtle, a chain of 35 sports-themed casual restaurants.
"Too often we all get caught up in the power of data, such as operational costs, the number of stores, staffing and the number of hours worked," Devito said. "But data points can't be the deciding factor in hiring, and that's where JobOn comes in. It allows us to get a full view of the applicants and decide whether their presentation in a recorded interview is enough to justify a live interview. This has cut our interview time down to a very manageable level and helped us find some great employees who we otherwise would have missed."
JobOn allows seekers to record video responses to general interview questions and then send them directly to recruiters and employers from the site. The videos, shot via webcam and camera-enabled mobile devices, provide a more comprehensive first impression because seekers can showcase their enthusiasm, poise and knowledge of the job.
According to the National Restaurant Association, the restaurant industry is the nation's second largest private-sector employer and represents 10 percent of the total U.S. workforce with 12.9 million employees.
