KEYE-TV (Austin, Texas): The Texas legislature is considering a bill that could require restaurants with at least 20 locations in Texas to post calorie counts on menus and menu boards. The bill would also require chain restaurants to make other nutritional information, such as the amount of carbs, fats and sugars, available to customers upon request. The House is expected to vote on the measure as early as next week.
Soda fountain fee, menu labeling out in Maryland
The Restaurant Association of Maryland has announced that the Maryland General Assembly repealed a long unused 1916 state law that charged a soda fountain license fee. In March, the Maryland comptroller directed local license authorities to revive this fee for any business operating a soda fountain device.
The association also successfully lobbied to defeat a House bill that would have required chain restaurants to disclose nutrition information on menus as well as a bill that would have required a mandatory 15-minute shift break for all employees who work more than four consecutive hours and a 30-minute break for all employees who work more than six consecutive hours.
