Cafe2U, a mobile espresso franchise that has opened five coffee franchises in the U.S. this year, has expanded into South Africa.

The company also won two medals in the Golden Bean Awards competition, an international coffee competition held in October that included 1,100 entries. Cafe2U won awards in the latté and chain/franchise espresso categories. The company also won a 2010 Golden Bean award in the coffee chain/franchise category.

Cafe2U's expansion into South Africa follows its entry into New Zealand, Germany, the U.S. and the U.K. The company, founded in Australia in 2000, began franchising in 2005 and has 200 franchise owners. The first Florida franchise opened Nov. 5 in Naples, Fla., joining U.S. locations in Chico, Calif.; Denver; Eugene, Ore.; and Savannah, Ga.

Marco Da Silva, who with his cousin Dylan launched Mokador Coffee in Johannesburg in 2007, is bringing Cafe2U to South Africa.

"We cannot wait to launch our first van into the market and introduce South Africa to the amazing coffee in the most convenient way possible," he said.

Now that the initial American franchises have proven successful, the company has aggressive expansion plans. "The U.S. is the largest coffee-drinking country in the world, and we think it can easily support 1,000 franchises," said Cafe2U USA President and CEO Scott Bundy.
