UFood Restaurant Group Inc. has announced that it joined the growing national "sustainable food" movement through switching to cage-free eggs.
Cage-free hens generally have two to three times more space per bird than caged hens. These hens can walk, spread their wings and lay their eggs in nests. These behaviors are denied to hens crammed into battery cages.
"UFood Grill has demonstrated that it takes social responsibility seriously and should be commended for improving the lives of animals in its supply chain," said Kristie Middleton, corporate outreach manger of the United States Humane Society factory farming campaign.
"Consumers are demanding natural ingredients in restaurant food today," said Charlie Cocotas, chief operating officer of UFood Grill. "We believe in using products in all our menu items, whenever possible, from animals that are not only raised naturally but are also hormone and antibiotic free."
