Ohio journalist weighs in on Five Guys vs. Smashburger

06 Nov 2009

As both Five Guys and Smashburger continue to break ground in new markets, the debate floor has opened to restaurant critics and consumers alike: Five Guys or Smashburger?

Both concepts have opened in Dayton, Ohio, giving Dayton Business-Journal reporter Caleb Stephens something to chew on.

In a Business-Journal article, Stephens shares his experiences at both restaurants and then determines his overall winner.

From the story:
The main difference between these two burger chains can be found on a quick glance of their respective menus. Five Guys, which prides itself on its freshness and lack of freezers, has just three menu items: burgers, hot dogs and fries. Conversely, Smashburger offers an array of specialty burgers — the Spicy Baja, the Buckeye Burger, the Mushroom Swiss — and also serves chicken sandwiches, chili and salads, as well as ice cream and beer.
I was disappointed in both restaurants’ French fries. The Smashfries ($1.79) seemed too fancy with olive oil and rosemary, while Five Guys skin-on fries ($2.59) were a bit undercooked on two occasions and lacked that good, crisp texture.
